US Tax Refund Tracking: Use the IRS Status Workflow

Understand the post-filing refund-status workflow and why return acceptance, processing and refund issuance are distinct stages.

Information reviewed against referenced sources:

Direct answer

Where should a federal refund status be checked?

Use the IRS refund-status service for current federal refund information. Filing or acceptance does not itself guarantee the refund amount or issue date because the return still moves through IRS processing.

Separate filing, acceptance, processing and refund

These are different operational stages. The official status service is the correct place to check the current IRS view.

Use IRS refund status rather than third-party timing promises

The IRS refund service is the appropriate source for supported status information after a return has entered processing. A preparer or software calculation can show an expected overpayment, but the IRS controls assessment, offsets and refund issuance.

If processing changes, review the filed return and IRS correspondence together

Keep the accepted return, payment/withholding records and any IRS notice in one post-filing file. When a refund is delayed or adjusted, first establish whether the issue is processing status, missing information, an IRS adjustment, an offset or another account matter before choosing a response path.
