Direct answer

What is the difference between a belated, revised and updated return?

A belated return addresses an original return filed after the normal due date; a revised return corrects an eligible return already filed; an updated return is a separate statutory route for permitted later updates and carries its own eligibility and additional-tax rules. The exact time limit depends on the relevant year and governing Act.

Choose the correction route from the filing history

Before filing anything further, identify whether no return was filed, a filed return contains an error, or the statutory window now requires an updated-return analysis.

AY 2026-27 remains under the 1961 Act

The Income Tax Department’s transition FAQ states that filings relating to AY 2026-27 and earlier years continue under the old Act, while the new Act has its own consolidated return provisions for later Tax Years.
