AIS vs Form 26AS: What to Check Before Filing ITR
A practical reconciliation guide to AIS, Form 26AS, TDS/TCS, tax payments and tax-credit mismatches before filing an Indian income tax return.
Information reviewed against referenced sources:
Are AIS and Form 26AS the same thing?
No. The Income Tax Department describes Form 26AS primarily as a tax-credit statement, while AIS provides a broader information view that can include TDS/TCS, specified financial transactions, tax payments, demand/refund and other information. Both should be reviewed against the taxpayer’s own records.
Reconcile information; do not simply copy it
Information statements are strong filing inputs, but they are not substitutes for the taxpayer’s books, contracts, salary records, investment statements and other evidence.
- Match TDS/TCS credits
- Check tax payments
- Review reported financial transactions
- Investigate duplicate or unfamiliar entries
- Confirm income classification before returning the amount
What a tax-credit mismatch can mean
The official tax-credit mismatch service can highlight differences between credits claimed in a filed return and credits reflected in Form 26AS. Depending on the source of the mismatch, correction may be required by the taxpayer or the deductor.
