Canada Refund & Notice of Assessment Tracking
CRA-source-led guidance for understanding the Notice of Assessment and supported progress/status tracking after filing.
Information reviewed against referenced sources:
What should be reviewed after a Canadian return is assessed?
Review the CRA Notice of Assessment because it records the assessment result and may identify changes, balances or other information. Use the appropriate CRA tracking service for supported status updates.
Treat the NOA as an assessed result, not merely a receipt
Compare the assessment to the filed position and investigate material differences rather than looking only for the refund amount.
Compare the NOA with the return instead of checking only the refund
CRA describes the Notice of Assessment as the summary of the calculated amounts for the return. Review assessed income, deductions or credits that materially differ from the filed position, as well as any balance or refund, and preserve the notice with the filing record.
Use CRA account and Progress tracker for supported processing information
CRA Progress tracker can show status information for supported files, including T1 returns and other requests. If the return is still being processed, distinguish that status from a completed assessment before considering a change or dispute.
